We are a non-denominational Christian Church located in the Memphis suburb of Bartlett, TN. We believe that the Bible is the WORD of GOD and therefore are committed to teaching the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, book by book. The songs we use in worship might sound contemporary, but the theme is always eternal; for our greatest goal is to worship our risen LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST in Spirit and in truth. We invite you to fellowship with us as we seek to grow in the grace and knowledge of our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. To HIM be the glory both now and forever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18
In order to identify the church as conservative in theology and evangelical in spirit, we set forth this general statement of fundamental beliefs:
We believe in the verbal inspiration of the whole Bible (II Tim 3:1; I Pet 1:21 ).
We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Ex 33:1; Jn 1:1, 14; Acts 5:3-4).
We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ (Rev 22:13), in His virgin birth (Matt 1:23), in His sinless life (Heb 4:15), in His miracles (Matt 11:2-5), in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood (I Pet 2:24), in His bodily resurrection (I Cor 15:3-5), in His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Acts 1:9-11), and in His personal and visible return in power and glory (Matt 24:29-31).
We believe that all people are born sinners and alienated from God (Rom 3:23) and therefore in order to receive eternal life, one must be born again (Jn 3:3) by confessing that Jesus is Lord and believing in one's heart that God has raised Him from the dead (Rom 10:9), that all are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ, and that only by God's grace through faith alone are we saved (Eph 2:8-9).
We believe that all believers should be water baptized in obedience to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ as a sign of their spiritual death, burial and resurrection unto the new life in Christ (Matt 28:18-20).
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life (Rom 8:9,23-24).
We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the unsaved; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are unsaved unto the resurrection of damnation (Rev 20:4-5,12-15).
Calvary Chapel began in the late 1960's as a small non-denominational church of 25 members pastored by Chuck Smith. At the turn of the century, Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa is home to some 30,000 believers; The Word for Today publishes Bible study books and tapes all over the world; KWVE broadcasts God's Word to all of Southern California; and Calvary Chapel's Bible College provides Bible education to thousands at its home campus in Twin Peaks, California and at over 20 extension campuses world wide.
Because of its size and influence, many Christians have asked exactly what Calvary Chapel believes, what are its distinctives, what sets it apart from other Christian groups. At Calvary Chapel, we have always been hesitant to try and answer those questions, not because we are unsure of our beliefs, but because we are cautious to avoid division within the Body of Christ. After all, what really matters is what we have in common as Christians: the essential doctrines of the infallibility of God's Word, the virgin birth of Christ, His sinless life, death for our sins, bodily resurrection. ascension to glory, and personal return to rule the earth. These are the essence of Christianity, and agreed upon by virtually all born again believers.
When we move away from the essential doctrines to those that are less essential we risk setting barriers up in the church, something we at Calvary Chapel have no desire to do. Still, Calvary Chapel is distinct from denominational churches and other Protestant groups and people want to know what those distinctions are. It is not our purpose to cause division or discord in the Body of Christ, conversely, we long for unity among God's people of all persuasions, and we allow for a great deal of flexibility even within our own ranks. Calvary Chapel pastors are not clones who all believe exactly the same thing. Still, there are distinctives that make Calvary Chapel unique and which define our mission. Pastor Chuck Smith has written a book called Calvary Chapel Distinctives which explains how Calvary Chapel functions within the body of Christ.
